Open Air Exhibition to Mark the Fifth Anniversary of the Adélard Centre.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the founding of its Artists in Residence programme, Frelighsburg's Adelard Centre invites you to discover an open-air exhibition of works by the sixteen artists who have stayed and worked at the centre since 2019.

The journey will take vistors to Frelighsburg, Dunham, Saint-Armand and Standbridge East: villages that the artists have visited and explored during their creative wanderings. These villages have become true meeting places both geographically and personally, allowing artists to build strong bonds with these communities. As well as snipits of history, livestyles of yesteryear and today, they also learn about elements that unite these unique villages (Map).

Reflections

Beyond the Border

I kept asking myself why Michel Hulneault’s work, on display this summer behind the community centre, had drawn so little of my attention since its installation. Re-reading the artist’s biographical notes brought me to a better understanding. De la frontière isn’t a work designed to captivate our attention; the grey tones are there to make us think of what is not shown….. the only element of the picture which refers to the title: the wall in the very middle of this somber landscape, and we only see the upper part. Through to transparency (unreal, significant) of this wall, we can see the outline of a few trees or bushes and a multitude of birds that appear to be fleeing a menacing sky… but we cannot see everything. After soaking this in, I closed my eyes in an attempt to see what the artist hasn’t shown: the frontierless liberty of the winged population, the walled-in vegetation, the unforgiving grey sky, indifferent (welcoming?). I closed and also lowered my eyes to try and imagine, to see the thousands - and soon to be millions - of destitute human beings, desperate, prisoners of the border walls, real ones, almost unscalable, except to those who can provide an offering to our insatiable greed.
